Mesh Stitch

Also known as Warp Knitting. This technique was developed in the 18th century and prevents runs or ladders in stockings. If a thread is broken a small hole will appear, this is because each needle on the machine is supplied by a separate thread rather than a continuous thread as in stocking stitch. There are several different mesh stitches and they became popular for stockings in the 1950s though had been present in the pre-nylon days.
